Hey there, my name is Heather, the people that work with me and know me call me by my nickname Hedgie for my love of Hedgehogs and because on set I would carry around a SMALL stuffed Hedgie toy that make people smile and laugh and to show that while we are professionals we do need the cute things in life.
When I was a child, my up bringing besides being told to go outside and do all the things that children do, were movies. I was three years old when I was exposed to one of two live action movies what would forever shape and be a driving force of my life, Terminator 2. Now, you ask… what parent would allow their three year old child to watch such a violent movie?
The 90’s was an amazing time for movies and my dad was someone raised me on Transformers, Terminator, Jurassic Park, Ninja Turtles and so forth, but Terminator… Terminator was and still to this day the movie that holds it’s worth and it’s power in the vastness of what was developed in areas of Special Effects, CGI, Practically done Stunts and of course the Props used.
When I was exposed to the characters and the arc and the power of the movie, I knew one day I wanted to get into the movies. How? I didn’t know, but I wanted to. Stan Winston was a Special Effects idol of mine especially when it came to Jurassic Park. I pretended as a child to be Rexy… I was a child, don’t judge me too harshly.
As I grew up, I grew more fascinated with how movies were made and I let the magic of the movies flood my mind so in my later high school years I joined theatre as a stage hand and I learned just how much went behind the scenes in even something as ‘simple’ as a theatre production. From there I went to college and learned so much more that I wanted to make things.
I wanted to get into film shortly after I got out of college, but the Writers Strike of ’08 waylaid me. A change in my life and I ended up doing a little bit of time in the military which led to me leaving with lower body injuries before I finally got my first taste of film. To this day… it will be the movie that much like Terminator changed my life and the people I met and became friends with now these days.
War for the Planet of the Apes, what a movie… I learned there that while Theatre and Film are close, nothing prepared me for how much REALLY went behind the scenes and I was apart of the movie as an Soldier for the movie, I was flabbergasted and I was thankful for the ability to get this when I got out of the military.
Years have gone by, I worked on crews, trained with a Stunt Coordinator who taught actors and performers how to be Stunt People, it was about four or five years in and I realized as a performer and watching Stunt Actors and Performers getting geared up that the props that they used some looked ragged, some looked rough and some just looked like they just were just mass produced with no real care. Stories that I had heard from performers was linked to props in one way or another, some cost too much, some were just weirdly made, OR they had so many that just broke that it was causing an issue to the production.
Over the last year through research, experimentation, and a couple of Stunt Coordinators taking a chance with me, I finally was able to make something that was both Robust and Lasting while looking Amazing and super impressive to the Stunt Performers that used and played with my Stunt Props.
Besides making fun and cool, collectibles because of my geek/nerd nature, I really wanted to offer and alternative to the Film Industry that looks one for one, wants to be something that is Safe to the Performers without the usual pit falls of Foam Degradation, Rubber breakage, weightiness and poor casting.
And so we have Hedgie Productions.
